Her blog reported yesterday morning that the procedure was successful, but initial physician’s reports showed some lymph nodes affected by the cancer as well; she will undergo chemotherapy in the coming weeks. Joni, in response to the diagnosis, wrote on her blog: “You have heard me often say that our afflictions come from the hand of our all-wise and sovereign God, and although cancer is something new, I am content to receive from God whatever He deems fit for me…Yes, it’s alarming, but rest assured that Ken and I are utterly convinced that God is going to use this to stretch our faith, brighten our hope, and strengthen our witness to others.”

Janice is a member of our congregation. I occasionally get emails about how she is doing. Here is an update….

Janice continues in her battle with cancer. Chemo has prevented the cancer from spreading, but it has not shrunk her cancer either. She spends as much time as possible with her family and regularly attends church. She trusts God, no matter how he chooses to heal her. From a personal perspective I can tell you, unless you knew she was sick, you would never know. She is in good spirits, she looks great, and remains positive.

Please continue to keep Janice in your prayers.

Joni Eareckson Tada, of Joni and Friends, International Disability Center, headquartered in Aquora Hills, California, has announced she is facing breast cancer. In this announcement, Joni further shows her commitment to service in stating,

“…now I have a chance to truly empathize and journey alongside, affirming that God’s grace is always sufficient for whatever the disease or disability.”

Joni’s online update this week further stated that:

“I will be undergoing tests the rest of this week, after which, I will have surgery on the afternoon of Monday, June 28th. Please pray that the upcoming tests, surgery and subsequent treatment will be successful (thankfully, my quadriplegia has no bearing on either the surgery or the treatment; I’m like any other woman with breast cancer — I simply want to focus my energies on getting better).”

Joni and Friends is a ministry mainly providing wheelchairs to people in need worldwide, disability awareness and education, and radio programs.

Some of the most paralyzing words in the human language contain the word, “cancer.” We are told to trust God in all things, but how does one find hope when coming face to face with their own mortality? Listen in as Zac Smith (aka missionary kid, church staff member, husband, son, Dad, and all-around good guy) explains how he is praising God for cancer.

Zac Smith stepped into eternity and went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, May 16, 2010.

What is going on below the surface is sometimes seen by others above the surface.

What is going on below the surface is sometimes seen by others above the surface. I call this an emotional eruption. What is an emotional eruption? It’s those times when we have a major reaction to a minor incident or it can be a time when we lose control of our emotions. In either case, something is driving our behavior. It is important for us to take the time to examine ourselves a little closer and answer the “why” question. When we do that, we are allowing God to do open-heart surgery. The end result? Useless baggage is removed. The Bible calls these things “strongholds.” They are the things that get in the way of us having internal peace, trust in others, and faith in God.

Digging Deeper

1) Can you think about a time in your life when your emotional reaction to a situation did not match what happened?

For example, Your husband is late getting home from work. You become angry and have a strong emotional response as soon as he enters the home.

2) Now that you have identified an emotional eruption, do some soul-searching to identify what was driving your response.

For example, you realize the reason you were upset (above example) was due to your first husband being unfaithful or maybe your husband has a history of being late.

3) Think through your own personal situation and write out two or three steps you can take to address your issues. Try to be specific. If you are going to speak with someone, remember, you can only change yourself. That is your goal.

For example, it would benefit a women who has been in a difficult relationship to take these worries and fears to her husband and to the Lord.

4) Further reading

2 Corinthians 10:5
Guest speaker, Alice Bostrom shared her heart and touched mine too. A big thank you to Debbie Heden, District Women’s Ministries Director, for inviting me and providing a wonderful renewal. Also, thanks to Mary Johnson and her family for working themselves to death all weekend. There are tons of jewels in your crown people!
